Carmela Fonbuena learned journalism working for Newsbreak, learned speed working for, and learned production working for GMA News TV. In Rappler, she combines all skills to become a one-woman news factory. In 2007, she won first prize in the Jaime V. Ongpin Awards for Excellence in Journalism for a story on political killings in the Philippines. She covers politics, human rights, and civil society.

She was born in La Union and graduated with a degree in Journalism, cum laude, from the University of the Philippines-Diliman in 2003.

Carmela has co-written three books on Philippine elections, and is buying advance tickets for the next performance of the electoral circus.
