Diseases are in the air, here’s how to avoid them according to a respiratory specialist
MANILA, Philippines – We are in the midst of multiple virus scares. What used to be your usual cough can now easily cause panic, thinking it could turn into something worse.
We’ve only recently learned how to be concerned about our surroundings, especially the air we breathe. Most of us now wear face masks wherever we go. The air quality in the Philippines is considered moderate – meaning it’s acceptable but there could be pollutants that may be a cause of health concern for some people.
“Poor air quality predisposes us to respiratory infection. For example, dust particles cause inflammation which makes the respiratory system produce more mucus. More mucus or secretions predispose a person to the habitation of viruses and bacteria,” said Dr. Rodolfo S. Pagcatipunan, M.D., a respiratory specialist.
This means that simply being exposed to the air outside can put us at risk of cough and other diseases that might stem from it.
How do we avoid these infections? Dr. Pagcatipunan tells us.
We have to strengthen our immunity
A strong immune system is our best defense against diseases. When we have a strong immune system, our body is able to fight the infections coming our way. To strengthen our immunity, we have to eat right and take the necessary supplements.
One of the minerals good for boosting immunity is Zinc. “Zinc stimulates your immune system to help you fight infection. During bouts of respiratory infection, your zinc gets consumed, that's why it needs to be replenished,” said Dr. Pagcatipunan.
Be more conscious when we're outdoors, especially when commuting
The air we breathe is already bad enough but diseases can also come from the people we interact with especially during our commute. Dr. Pagcatipunan reminds us to avoid touching our face, specifically the nose, and always practice strict handwashing or use of hand sanitizers.
And if somebody coughs, make sure to cover your nose and mouth.
Addressing signs and symptoms before things get worse
When we’re already feeling the signs and symptoms of cough, it’s better to address it before it gets worse. One way is by taking medicine that contains a mucolytic like Carbocisteine and minerals like Zinc.
“Carbocisteine and Zinc are complimentary combinations for people suffering from cough with phlegm. Carbocisteine helps you expel the phlegm efficiently by making the phlegm less viscous. While the addition of zinc helps improve immunity, enabling the person to fight infection,” explained Dr. Pagcatipunan.
With everything that’s happening in the right now, tips like these shouldn’t just be taken as mere reminders but valuable information that we need to consciously follow. – Rappler.com
