PLDT builds 1st 'Fibr City' in Mindanao
MANILA, Philippines – PLDT Incorporated further accelerated its fiber rollout in the Philippines, laying down fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) facilities in General Santos City in Mindanao.
This is PLDT's first "Fibr City" in Mindanao, which is seen to bring "ultra fast" internet speed.
The fiber rollout will also benefit the data connectivity needs of those in the provinces of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani.
"General Santos's robust export industry and burgeoning medium to large enterprises, as well as its growing and diverse population, fits the profile of a Fibr City," said Oscar Enrico Reyes Jr, PLDT first vice president and head of Home Business, in a statement on Sunday, April 9.
This allows the telecommunications giant to provide residents in General Santos City with upload and download speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
Last month, PLDT completed its pioneer Fibr City project in Toledo City, Cebu, serving mainly the mining and tourism industries. (READ: The meaning behind new PLDT, Smart logos)
"PLDT envisions to increase the number of Smart Homes and Fibr Cities nationwide which will result in the Philippines being a Smart Nation," PLDT chairman and chief executive officer Manuel Pangilinan said.
With a footprint of around 2.8 million homes passed as of end-2016, PLDT is further expanding the reach of its FTTH network to about 4.4 million homes by 2017.
PLDT has also started to deploy hybrid fiber technologies, which can boost data speeds up to 600 Mbps to 700 Mbps over existing copper lines.
The PLDT group has invested over P300 billion over the last 10 years in building its integrated fixed and wireless network. This includes the country's most extensive fiber transmission and distribution infrastructure, which now has 150,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables. – Rappler.com
