Filipino Forbes lister in #WonderWomen video
In January, Forbes named Maria Theresa “Reese” Fernandez-Ruiz as one of the “30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs,” citing that her company, Rags2Riches, booked a “consistent” 100% annual growth rate over its first 5 years of operation from 2007-2012.
Ruiz started her social enterprise venture by helping the women of Payatas dumpsite in Quezon City earn their own living. It was a small livelihood project with a huge goal: to yank families out of poverty.
Rags2Riches helps the women earn a livable income from crafting upcycled scrap cloth, organic materials, and indigenous fabrics.
To date, Rags2Riches products can be seen displayed in the shelves of top US shopping malls in Los Angeles, Minnesota, and New York.
“I believe more people from around the world can explore how they too can build their existing or future businesses to become catalysts of positive change and inclusive development,” Fernandez previously told Rappler.
International development website Devex recognized Ruiz as among the 40 Under 40 Leaders in International Development in 2013. The World Economic Forum deemed her as a Young Global Leader in 2012; and Entrepreneur of the Year by the World Entrepreneurship Forum in 2011.
Aside from Ruiz, the US embassy in Manila’s #WonderWomen 5-episode series will also feature leadership examples in the fields of civic engagement, education, environment, and music and arts.
