Zombie overload as we know it
MANILA, Philippines - Just in time for Halloween, hit zombie TV series The Walking Dead is back for its 3rd bloody season.
In the season premiere, Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) and the group went on a walker (another word for "zombie") killing spree to claim a prison — with its weapons, food, medicine and protective walls — as their new home and refuge from the zombie-infested world.
The episode wasn’t without its own chilling shockers, of course (spoiler alert): a zombie hunt in the dark basement of the prison and a sudden bite to Hershel’s leg forced Rick to whack it off with several gruesome axe blows to save Hershel’s life.
They also found out that they’re not alone in their new home, as the prison turned out to have a handful of felon survivors.
Whether or not they can be trusted remains to be seen.
As the show’s famous catchphrase goes, "Fight the dead, fear the living."
Why we love 'em zombies
Pinoy couch potatoes have definitely been one with the worldwide zombie craze brought about by this hit TV series that debuted in 2010.
We think it's because:
1) The show (and other zombie series, for that matter) provides the audience with the suspense, the gore and the horror without really scaring you sh*tless.
There is no such thing as being too scared to get up and pee in the middle of the night because of a zombie television series.
2) The terror is over when the show is over.
You can scream to your heart’s content without consequence, without any of the horrifying scenes embedding themselves into your consciousness.
3) They appeal to the tight Pinoy family ties.
We relate with the protagonist who suffers the psychological torture of seeing his loved ones still present but in rotting flesh, reduced to monsters who will devour him if he doesn’t kill them first.
It’s the most heart-tugging clash between loving attachment and urgent survival.
Why audiences love TWD
The Walking Dead is known for being a different kind of zombie story.
Based on an ongoing comic book series by Robert Kirkman, instead of banking on the undead monsters for the show’s excitement, it digs deep into its characters and explores all the possible mutations of the human psyche in a world that is all about survival.
Season 3 promises more intrigue and drama set against a world that now seems to have more zombies than people.

There are new characters to watch in season 3:
1) Michonne is a mysterious stranger who has managed to survive out in the open with her katana blade and the two maimed zombies she keeps close to cover her scent.
2) The Governor is a charismatic leader of Woodbury, a seemingly utopian community, barricaded behind walls.
But if he’s anything like his comic book character, viewers are in for a twisted surprise.
