MANILA, Philippines – The Hollywood awards season has now officially begun, and with the 75th Golden Globes done, we now have more films than ever on our to-watch list. (FULL LIST: Golden Globes 2018 winners)
Whether they took home a big haul at the Globes or made people wonder why they didn’t, these are the TV shows and films you’ll probably be hearing more of as awards season moves into full swing.
FILMS
Get Out
With nominations for Best Musical or Comedy Film and Best Actor, and lots of applause from critics and viewers alike, many were surprised that this movie didn’t bring home a Globe. The Jordan Peele flick, starring Daniel Kaluuya, takes racism head on as it tells the story of a black man who meets his white girlfriend’s family for the first time and stays at their isolated estate, only to discover a terrifying secret that puts him in danger.
Lady Bird
A coming-of-age film by Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird stars Saoirse Ronan in the performance that won her the Best Actress award at this year's Globes. The film follows Saoirse’s character, an opinionated teen at a small-town Catholic school who has big dreams for her future and struggles with a strained but loving relationship with her mother.
Call Me By Your Name
While it didn’t win the Globe for Best Picture, many consider this to be their number one film. The story of a fleeting first love, the film stars Armie Hammer as Oliver, a doctoral student who falls in love with 17-year-old Elio, played by Timothée Chalamet in a performance that earned him a Globe nomination for Best Actor.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The film took home a slew of awards at the Globes, including Best Drama Film, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell, and Best Actress for Frances McDormand. The film, directed by Martin McDonagh, is a black comedy that tells of a mother who uses 3 billboards to call attention to her daughter’s unsolved murder.
The Shape of Water
This dark fantasy film earned a Best Picture nomination and won Guillermo del Toro a Globe for Best Director. Set in 1962, the story is about a mute janitor played by Sally Hawkins, who falls in love with a strange humanoid amphibian being held at the secret research facility she works for.
I, Tonya
The biopic stars Margot Robbie in as figure skater Tonya Harding, who found herself in the thick of controversy for her involvement in an attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan. Robbie’s performance earned her a Globe nomination for Best Actress, while Allison Janney, who plays Tonya’s mother in the film, won the Globe for Best Supporting Actress.
Darkest Hour
Gary Oldman practically disappears into his role as Winston Churchill, in this war drama about the legendary British statesman’s early days as Prime Minister, made complicated by Hitler gaining power during World War II. The film won Oldman his first Golden Globe.
The Post
Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, this movie tells the story of the Washington Post's first female publisher Katharine Graham and editor-in-chief Ben Bradlee as they race against the New York Times and the US government to publish the secret Pentagon Papers.
The Disaster Artist
The film stars James Franco in the role that would win him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a musical or comedy. The film tells the true story of the making of The Room, directed by Tommy Wiseau and has reached cult status for being one of the worst films ever made.
TV SERIES
This Is Us
Now on its second season, this show, which stars Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, and Golden Globe 2018 Best Drama Actor Sterling K Brown, is about several people who are all interconnected and all share the same birthday.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
A period comedy set in 1950’s New York, the series follows a Jewish housewife who decides to become a stand-up comedian after her husband leaves her. The series won the Globe for Best musical or comedy series, and Best musical or comedy actress for Rachel Broshnahan, who plays the title role.
Master of None
Two seasons in, and this Netflix series continues to bring on the laughs as it follows the romantic and professional misadventures of Dev, played by Golden Globe Best musical or comedy actor Aziz Ansari, who also created the show.
Fargo
The 3rd season of the crime drama won Ewan McGregor his first Golden Globe as he plays the dual role of brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy. Ray and his fiancee Nikki are implicated in a double murder after they try to steal from Emmit.
The Handmaid’s Tale
Based on the dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood, the Best Drama Series winner follows a group of “Handmaids” – the final few fertile women in the new society of Gilead, who are routinely subjected to rape in order to bear children for the ruling class. Elisabeth Moss, who plays a handmaid named Offred, took home the Globe for Best Drama Actress.
Big Little Lies
A miniseries produced by some of Hollywood’s most powerful women, Big Little Lies is based on a novel by Liane Moriarty, and follows the lives and secrets of several affluent women leading up to a murder that shakes their privileged town. The series took home a slew of awards at the Golden Globes, including Best Limited Series, Best Actress for Nicole Kidman, Best Supporting Actress for Laura Dern, and Best Supporting Actor for Alexander Skarsgard.
