MANILA, Philippines – As Pia Wurtzbach has been proving with her statements as Miss Universe, beauty queens nowadays must have some knowledge of politics and current events too.
With election day drawing near, Rappler asked the winners of Binibining Pilipinas 2016 what qualities they think their ideal leaders should have.
On Monday, May 2, weeks after they won their crowns, 7 queens – Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina, Bb Pilipinas International Kylie Verzosa, Bb Pilipinas Supranational Joanna Eden, Bb Pilipinas Intercontinental Jennifer Hammond, Bb Pilipinas Globe Nichole Manalo, Bb Pilipinas Grand International Nicole Cordoves, and first runner-up Angelica Alita – gave their thoughts on the leaders they want.
Maxine, who carries the pressure of following in Pia's footsteps, answered, "The leader I want for this country is someone who has a heart [for] everyone. And [someone who is] willing to listen... and to give a hand to these poor little children, so that they will be inspired to be a good leader also."
Others, like Kylie and Joanna, gave simple but effective one liners: "A listening president" (Kylie) and "[is] determined to implement positive change." (Joanna)
Meanwhile, Nicole said: "[The leader I want is] someone who has the best intentions of really – economically, of course that's my main concern – economically stabilizing the country and shooting it upwards." Nicole studied economics at the Ateneo de Manila University.
On election day, May 9, Filipinos will vote for their next president, vice president, senators, and other local leaders.
