Duterte wins majority vote in Xavier University mock poll

MANILA, Philippines – The results are in and Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is the president – at least in Xavier University (XU).
The tough-talking mayor got a majority of the votes at 65.13%, followed by Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago (13.38%), former Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas (9.31%), Senator Grace Poe (6.93%), and Vice President Jejomar Binay (1.96%).
The mock elections – which Xavier University’s social advocacy arm, Kristohanong Katilingban sa Pagpakabana – Social Involvement Office (KKP-SIO), sponsored – were held on February 19 to 20 from 8 am to 7 pm in the university campus.
In the race for vice president, Representative Leni Robredo won a slim lead at 27.17% over Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who received 24.23% of the vote. Senator Alan Peter Cayetano received 22.76% of the votes; Senator Chiz Escudero, 13.87%; Senator Antonio Trillanes, 6.65%; and Senator Gringo Honasan, 0.98%.
XU said they hoped the mock polls would “foster the desire for active participation, and open and critical pursuit of the truth, as well as help build the political maturity of the electorate in XU.”
By the numbers
The city of Cagayan de Oro, the capital of Misamis Oriental province, has 305,321 registered voters for the 2016 elections. It also boasted an 80.61% voter turnout in 2013.
During the 2010 national elections, Binay won a landslide victory in the area with 115,938 votes. Roxas was a distant second with 70,116 votes.
The first presidential debate was also held in the city. Rappler editors assessed each candidate’s performance per round and gave Round 1 to Roxas and Rounds 2 and 3 to Poe. (READ: The Cagayan de Oro Presidential Debate: Summary and Highlights)
The Movement for Good Governance also kept track of the debate, and placed Roxas 1st, followed by Poe, Santiago, Duterte, and Binay.
