The Dorsal Effect: Saving the sharks of Lombok
MANILA, Philippines – For years the men of Lombok, Indonesia hunted sharks for a living.
It proved lucrative, with the demand of shark's fin in cuisine alone sparking profits for traders and hunters alike.
But there's one woman who dreams of putting an end to this trade.
Kathy Xu came up with a paradise trip to save sharks, help fishermen and promote conservation in Lombok. Called The Dorsal Effect, Kathy's boat trip off Tanjung Luar in Lombok’s is like a secret shared to a select few – an unheard of, yet unspoilt location.
The Dorsal Effect aims to wean shark hunters off the cruel trade and introduce them to alternative sources of livelihood. Kathy's efforts now has several ex-hunters working as boatmen, tour guides, and resort staff.
