Davao City monitoring developments in Indonesia after suicide bombings
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The government of Davao City, which has been on high alert since a terror attack in 2016, is monitoring developments in Indonesia following the spate of suicide bombings on churches in Surabaya.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio revealed this Thursday night, May 17, in a text message to Rappler, when asked if the city government is closely following reports on the situation in Indonesia.
“Yes. Davao City has always been on high terrorism threat ever since after the Roxas Night Market bombing," the mayor said.
She added that Davao City has been on red alert since the imposition of martial law in Mindanao.
Security units in Davao City took part in anti-terror drills in February this year, as the Philippine National Police believes the Maute group could be launching a string of attacks in Mindanao cities. The city was the first local government unit (LGU) to conduct the drill.
“We are fortunate that the LGU of Davao City had earlier organized (it) which covers supportive elements like Task Force Davao and other supporting units based (here) purposely to curb terrorist attacks,” said Senior Superintendent Alexander Tagum, director of the city’s police office.
Task Force Davao is under the Philippine Army’ 10th Infantry Division, which is in charge of counter-terror operations in President Rodrigo Duterte’s hometown of over 1.6 million people.
The unit has deployed personnel to man checkpoints at the city’s entry points. Churches, parks, and other places of convergence here can also be seen guarded by uniformed men, both from the counter-terror unit and the city police.
Over 10 people were killed abd dozens of others hur in the May 13 suicide bombings in 3 churches in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia on East Java.
The attacks were carried oour by families linked to the local extremist network Jamaah Ansharut Daulah which, like the Maute Group, is linked to the Islamic State (ISIS).
In Davao City, Tagum again urged the public to be vigilant and report to authorities any suspicious activities in their villages.
