Grenade blast hits Iloilo electric tower
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - An explosion damaged an electric tower of state-owned National Transmission Corporation (Transco) in the municipality of Miag-ao in Iloilo province.
The blast, which occurred on Friday evening, May 10, did not cause a power outage because the lines are "not yet energized."
"Grenade thrown in one of the towers in Miag-ao but the lines are not yet energized," read a tweet from the Department of Energy (DOE).
The tower is not yet operational. It is waiting for power to be generated by the mini-Hydro Power Plant in Bugasong, Antique.
The explosion damaged the cemented portion of one of the tower's posts, disclosed the Miag-ao Municipal Police Station.
According to a PNP news release, the post-blast investigation by the PNP and Philippine Army revealed that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was used by the suspects.
It is still unclear whether the explosion was election-related. The incident did not cause injuries or fatalities.
