Buy safe toys for the holidays – DOH
MANILA, Philippines – As Filipinos scramble to do their last-minute shopping, the Department of Health (DOH) reminded shoppers to buy safe toys for children.
And by safe, the health department meant toys that are:
- suitable to the child’s physical capabilities and mental and social development
- appealing and interesting
- safe for the child’s age
"Aside from being appealing and suitable for a child’s age, toys should be safe from choking, sharp points or edges, especially for young children,” Health spokesperson Lyndon Lee Suy said in a statement Friday, December 19.
If you haven’t bought those toys for the kids yet, DOH suggests the following age-appropriate gifts:
For newborns to one year old:
For 2 to 3 years old (toddlers):
For 4 to 5 years old:
Avoid buying the following toys for children under 3 years old:
- choking hazards such as balls with a diameter of 1.75 inches or less
- toys that contain or break easily into small parts
- toys with sharp points or edges, or parts that could pinch or trap fingers, toes, or hair
Make sure to check packaging labels, Lee Suy said, and follow instructions or precautions written on them.
“Mahalaga ang buhay. Tiyakin natin na ang ireregalong laruan ay magdadala ng saya at hindi disgrasya. Salubungin natin ang Bagong Taon nang ligtas, masaya, at puno ng pag-asa,” he added, borrowing a line from the department’s anti-firecrackers campaign.
