MANILA, Philippines – Governor Mujiv Hataman is seeking reelection in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) amid the uncertainty surrounding the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL).
Acting as representative, Norombai Utto, a scholar who graduated top of her class at the Hji Salik National High School in Mamasapano, filed Hataman’s certificate of candidacy on Thursday, October 15. She delivered an emotional valedictory address in 2015 asking for the end of war in the region. (READ: ‘Bakwit’ valedictorian’s wish: ‘Sana araw-araw graduation’)
Hataman was appointed as officer-in-charge by President Benigno Aquino III in 2011 and won against Pakung “Pax” Mangudadatu in the 2013 gubernatorial race – the region’s first elections synchronized with the rest of the Philippines.
‘BBL is still priority’
Hataman explained that the BBL is still a “top priority” and is aware of the implications of his bid for a second term.
“It is our top priority and we commit ourselves to the future,” he explained. “Our term is not yet over and we are ready to step down from the post whenever necessary, in this term or the next.”
Both chambers of the Congress set December 16 as deadline for the passage of the BBL. However, members of the peace panel want it passed before the Asia Pacific Economic Conference in November.
The regional government however continues to prepare for the transition to the proposed judicial entity despite issues and controversies.
The ARMM governor maintains that despite the law’s flaws, there is still no alternative to the BBL.
“Should the law be passed in December, we need to ensure a smooth transition,” he said. – Rappler.com
