MANILA, Philippines – Despite performing well in recent senatorial surveys, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio has decided to gun for reelection instead in her hometown.
Carpio filed her certificate of candidacy for Davao City mayor on Monday, October 15. She was accompanied by her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio.
Carpio, President Rodrigo Duterte's eldest daughter, was among the top 5 preferred senatorial bets in Pulse Asia's September survey on senatorial preferences.
Coupled with the emergence of her regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), some expected her to run for senator. HNP, while only a regional party, has two senatorial lineups and alliances with national parties.
Carpio had once teased critics of her father that she would run for senator just to "annoy" them.
On Friday, October 12, Carpio's brother, former Davao City vice mayor Paolo Duterte, filed his certificate of candidacy for Davao City 1st District representative. – Rappler.com
