Vico Sotto to run for Pasig mayor
MANILA, Philippines – The youngest city councilor of Pasig, with just two years of experience in politics, decides to run for city mayor against the formidable incumbent.
Riding on the promise of "new style of politics," Vico Sotto filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for Pasig City mayor Wednesday, October 17, at the local Commission on Elections (Comelec) office.
The 29-year-old Sotto is the son of comedian Vic Sotto and actress Connie Reyes, who both accompanied him Wednesday.
He is the youngest city councilor of Pasig and is also chairman of the city's Public Relations and Information Committee. Sotto gathered the most votes despite running as an independent candidate in the 2016 elections.
Sotto will run under Aksyon Demokratiko with Rep. Roman Romulo, a reelectionist. He has no vice mayor and no councilors under his slate.
“Dalawa't kalahating taon sa konseho, gusto kong magpakilala bagong istilo ng pulitika sa Pasig. Hindi ako natatakot kalaban ang mga Eusebio" Sotto said.
(Two and a half years in the city council, I now want to introduce a new style of politics in Pasig. I am not afraid of the Eusebios.)
Sotto was referring to incumbent Mayor Robert "Bobby" Eusebio, who is seeking his second term.
The Eusebio family has dominated Pasig politics for almost 3 decades, starting with Vicente "Enteng" Eusebio in 1992.
"Start tayo ng pulitika mismo sa Pasig. Hindi 'yung takutan, kapag hindi kakampi, hindi kasama sa posisyon," Sotto said. (Let's start new politics here in Pasig. No more scaring each other. Enough of excluding people who are not part of your team.)
Sotto promised to "help the people (of Pasig) to rise from poverty."
Some roads were closed in Pasig for Eusebio's grand parade from Pasig Cathedral to the local Comelec office on the fifth floor of the city hall.
