La Mesa Dam red alert: ‘Evacuate now’
MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Red Cross (PRC) chairman Richard Gordon urged residents living near the path of La Mesa Dam in Quezon City to immediately evacuate as red alert was raised at 2 am Monday, August 19.
As of 3 am, water level was reported to be 51 cm short of overflowing.
La Mesa Dam's spilling level was already at 79.64 meters. It's spilling level is at 80.15 meters.
"Please call them NOW and tell them to evacuate as soon as possible! #RescuePH," Gordon posted on Facebook.
Residents along Tullahan River have been particularly requested to evacuate, as elevation is expected to rise further due to rains and minimum demand, Gordon said.
Earlier, in its 9 pm bulletin Sunday, the Pagasa said "severe flooding" due to "heavy to intense rain" was to be "expected" in Metro Manila, and advised residents "to take precautionary measures. The 12:10 am update maintained the red rainfall warning.
In its "red rainfall warning" issued at 6:15 am, the weather bureau reported heavy to intense rains affecting Metro Manila, Bataan, Zambales, Pampanga, Rizal, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Tarlac, Bulacan, Occidental Mindoro, and Northern Quezon. It is most likely to continue for the next 3 hours.
Pagasa advised the public to take precautionary measures as severe flooding is expected in these areas.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), local government units, and other agencies have been tweeting about flooded areas in different parts of the capital region.

Red Cross action centers are helping to enforce the evacuation.
