Scientists discover strange planet with 3 stars

Jul 08, 2016 - 2:35 PM

The planet named HD 131399Ab is located about 340 light years from Earth and is believed to be about 16 million years old

Located about 320 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Centaurus (The Centaur), HD 131399Ab is about 16 million years old, making it also one of the youngest exoplanets discovered to date, and one of very few directly imaged planets. With a temperature of around 580 degrees Celsius and an estimated mass of four Jupiter masses, it is also one of the coldest and least massive directly-imaged exoplanets. EPA/L. Giant Chile telescope spots unique spiral structure

Oct 11, 2012 - 12:32 PM

Astronomers using a powerful Chile based telescope on Wednesday October 10 released a rare image of a spiral shell of cosmic dust and gas surrounding a red giant star

Observations using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have revealed an unexpected spiral structure in the material around the old star R Sculptoris. This feature has never been seen before and is probably caused by a hidden companion star orbiting the star. Image: ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO)
