Russia destroys Gilas Youth to end U19 World Cup group phase
MANILA, Philippines – Russia showed no fear and hesitation in dispatching Gilas Pilipinas Youth, 90-64, in the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup at Heraklion, Greece on Tuesday, July 2 (Wednesday, July 3, Philippine time).
Dave Ildefonso forced the offense to move on his own and finished with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Kai Sotto performed to his usual standards with 14 markers, 7 boards and 6 blocks while Carl Tamayo had 12 points and 5 rebounds.
With the sorry loss, Gilas Youth dropped to 4th place in Group C and arranged a daunting Round of 16 match against Group D leader Serbia, the world’s No. 4 U19 team, on Thursday, July 4, Philippine time.
A 7-0 Russian run right after tip-off turned to be a preview of bad things to come for Gilas Youth as they absorbed a 15-28 deficit after the opening period.
Things went from bad to worse for the undermanned Filipino squad as the Russians resumed their relentless drives, dunks and pull-up jumpers to begin the 2nd quarter.
As Gilas missed layup after layup, Russia drove the lead up to 19, 49-30, after a quick three by Zakhar Vedishchev and a buzzer-beating long two from Dmitrii Kadoshnikov to end the 1st half.
The 2nd half was by no means any better for Gilas Youth as Russia still did whatever they wanted on the floor. Pumped by Nikita Mikhailovskii back-to-back threes at the 3:54 mark of the 4th frame, the Russians pushed the lead as 30, 89-59, off a late layup by Aleksandr Shcherbenev.
Aleksandr Ershov led the way for Russia with 21 points on an efficient 10-of-13 clip while Mikhailovskii added 16 markers and 10 rebounds on a 4-of-6 shooting from downtown.
Gilas Youth will play the rest of the tournament without Fil-Nigerian star AJ Edu, who has since went home to start a long rehab process for his torn right ACL, meniscus and fractured femur.
