MANILA, Philippines-LaVar Ball was a proud father as the Los Angeles Lakers formally selected his son Lonzo Ball as the second overall pick of the 2017 NBA Draft on Thursday, June 22 (Friday in Manila).
The smile plastered on his face didn’t seem to wear off, and nothing- not even the boos he was showered with as he excited the Barclays Center- seemed to matter.
In fact, Ball rode with it, played to the crowd, and was seen tossing his purple and gold hat into the stands.
The Ringer’s Rodger Sherman captured the moment on Twitter.
Ball has been a polarizing subject for fans the past few months leading into draft day due to his outlandish claims. He once swore that he “would kill” Michael Jordan in a game of one-on-one, and sought a $1 billion shoe deal for his son, claiming he could outperform two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry, who has a deal with Under Armour.
Lonzo Ball now wears Big Baller Brand shoes - the brainchild of his father - making him the first player to ever have his own signature shoe before even being drafted. – Rappler.com
