Young Filipino ballers impress Sacramento Kings center, WNBA legend
MANILA, Philippines – Sacramento Kings center Willie Cauley-Stein and 4-time WNBA champion Sheryl Swoopes formed the 2018 Jr NBA Philippines All-Star team composed of the top 16 from the national training camp.
After coaching the kids this weekend, May 19 to 20, the NBA player was impressed with the young Filipino players and organizers' enthusiasm.
“It’s been great working with these kids, the coaches, the people who bring this all together, make sure things run real smooth. I was really blessed to come out here and be graced by your culture," said Cauley-Stein.
Most Valuable Player Prince Ray Alao of San Beda University led the top 8 boys in the All-Star team composed of John Lester Amagan, Nathan Jan Jundana, Ethan Rod Alian, Kim Aaron Tamayo, Christian Joi Mesias, Rhon Khaniel Telles and Seven Gagate.
In the girls side, MVP Pauline Angelique Valle of Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School bannered the squad of Kyla Marie Mataga, Arriane Esquivel, Christine Nicholle Venterez, Madelyn Flores, Aishe Solis, Gin Kyla Rellequtte and Marielle Vingno.
The All-Star team will fly to Shanghai, China in October 2018 for the NBA China Games that will feature the Philadelphia 76ers and Dallas Mavericks.
Hazel Yambot and Tata Belangel, the 2018 Coaches of the Year, will also join the team in China.
