Magnolia a win away from finals with big Game 5 win vs Rain or Shine
MANILA, Philippines – Magnolia toppled Rain or Shine for the third straight time to move one win away from the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup finals following an 82-74 Game 5 win at the Cuneta Astrodome on Wednesday, April 24.
The Hotshots looked gassed out after dropping the first two games of the best-of-seven series but they displayed composure as they inched closer to their second straight finals appearance.
With Paul Lee held scoreless, the backcourt duo of Mark Barroca and Jio Jalalon carried the scoring cudgels and made key plays in the final frame for Magnolia.
Barroca finished with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals while Jalalon added 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists in the low-scoring affair.
The Hotshots mounted a seven-point lead with 1:30 minutes left to play off a Rafi Reavis and-one play, 78-71, but the Elasto Painters retaliated with an Ed Daquioag triple to trim their deficit to 4.
However, Rain or Shine's comeback attempt was shortlived as Jalalon found Reavis open for a short stab with 40 seconds remaining.
Jalalon then iced the game with a pair of free throws after the Elasto Painters missed 3 straight shots from beyond the arc.
Reavis was big in the win with 9 points and 12 rebounds, while Ian Sangalang and Rodney Brondial conjoined for 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Gabe Norwood paced Rain or Shine with 15 points and 5 rebounds, while James Yap – who scored 24 points in Game 4 – was limited to 12 points on a 3-of-10 shooting clip.
Game 6 is slated on Friday, April 26, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
