TIMELINE: D-League coach Alvin Pua's history of referee incidents
MANILA, Philippines - Alvin Pua, the head coach of the PBA D-League’s Cagayan Valley Rising Suns, is no stranger to controversy.
The 36-year-old Pua, who played for San Sebastian in the NCAA and played two games for the defunct PBA team Santa Lucia Realtors in the 2007-08 season, has a long history of incidents with referees.
Pua, who is married to team manager Criselda Antonio-Pua, reportedly punched referee Ben Montero on Thursday, May 14, and sent him to the hospital.

March 12, 2012
Pua punched referee Jessie Jarabejo during a tune-up game against National University and the Cagayan Valley Rising Suns.
Jarabejo made a call that didn’t bode well with Pua, who cursed and screamed at the official from the sidelines. After the referee approached him, Pua shoved the official and punched him on the nose.
Pua was then suspended 3 games by the PBA Commissioner’s Office for the incident but would have been banned from the league had it taken place in an official game.
February 26, 2013
Pua was ejected at the 4:42 mark in the second quarter of his team’s D-League Finals Game Two against the NLEX Road Warriors for continuous complaining and making contact with a game referee.
The Road Warriors were ahead 33-18 at the time of Pua’s disposal.
December 15, 2014
Pua was ejected from his team’s D-League game against Jumbo Plastic after making “physical contact” with two referees in the game.
Pua was then summoned to the PBA Commissioner’s Office, but didn’t show up. A representative from Cagayan Valley went in his place.
For his action, Pua was fined P50,000 and suspended 3 games again.
February 9, 2015
Pua challenged members of Cebuana-Lhuillier to a fist fight after his team won in Game 2 of their semifinal series.
“If they want a fight, I’m ready, any place,” he was quoted saying in Tagalog.
During the game, the head coach confronted Cebuana forward Kevin Ferrer following a loose ball scramble and was assessed with a technical foul.
May 14, 2015
Pua was ejected from his team’s game against Liver Marin for punching referee Ben Montero toward the end of the first half.
Montero was going to assess a warning call on Pua and was in the process of informing the Official’s Table when he was charged at by the head coach, who hit him on the head and back. The assault led to a cut on the official’s face.
