Global FC bounces back with draw against Pahang FA
MANILA, Philippines – Coming off a devastating loss during their first AFC Cup outing, Global FC pulled an upset after holding Malaysian club Pahang FA, 0-0, at the Darul Makmur Stadium on Wednesday, March 11.
Visiting side Global FC marched on treacherous territory at the packed home stadium of their foes, with Mark Hartmann and debuting young booter Paolo Salenga leading the charge for the UFL titleholders.
Pahang, on the other hand, welcomed their guests by showcasing their might on the offensive end during the first half of the match but Junjun Badelic, who was manning the posts for Global FC on behalf of the injured Patrick Deyto, stepped up in stopping their chances.
The Filipino club knocked on Pahang’s door on two pristine occasions during the 23rd and 40th minute but both shots taken by Hartmann failed to punch through as the game between both squads entered the break at 0-0.
Meanwhile, the narrow bench of Global started to take its toll on their gameplay as Salenga and Dennis Villanueva, who were subsequently replaced by Richard Talaroc and Renato Gonzales, had to be stretchered out of the pitch after being on the receiving end of the tight defense of the Malaysian side.
The back line quartet of Daisuke Sato, Masaki Yanagawa, Amani Aguinaldo and Jerry Barbaso stood their ground during the greater portion of the match as they foiled the attacks coming from the dangerous offense of Pahang.
Substitute Talaroc almost sank the opening goal for Global FC after obtaining the deflected ball off a Hartmann cross but the ball failed to find the back of the net in the 81st minute.
As the clock winded down on the AFC Cup Group G bout, the team from the Philippines incurred a final minute setback, as Aguinaldo was booked for the second time prompting the referee to send him off the pitch.
Global FC failed to catch the elusive three points and the win during the second AFC Cup game but succeeded in holding off the home club at 0-0 at the end of regulation.
The Philippine premier league champs is scheduled to go up against Burmese club Yadanarbon FC at the Mandalarthiri Stadium in Myanmar for their third match in the continental football tournament on March 18. – Rappler.com
