Jedrzejczyk beats Penne into bloody pulp to retain UFC belt
MANILA, Philippines – Joanna Jedrzejczyk successfully defended her UFC women’s strawweight title for the first time since winning it three months ago as she thwarted Jessica Penne in the main event of UFC Fight Night 69 on Sunday, June 21 (PH Time) at the O2 World in Berlin, Germany.
The 27-year-old Jedrzejczyk finished Penne with her signature stand-up arsenal to score a technical knockout triumph at the 4:22 mark of the third round.
However, it was not a walk in the park for Jedrzejczyk in the opening round, where Penne quickly moved into the clinch and attempted to drag her Polish foe down to the mat in order to put her jiu-jitsu black belt to work.
While Penne was occasionally successful in getting Jedrzejczyk to the floor, she was unable to pacify her cage counterpart on the canvas as the champion managed to go back to her feet to unload her vicious striking repertoire.
Jedrzejczyk scattered strikes from every angle possible, mixing in a ghoulish dose of kicks, punches and elbows that covered Penne’s face in blood and gave her a meaty hematoma above the right eye.
A wicked elbow from Jedrzejczyk in the second round caused Penne’s nose to explode, but it did not stop UFC’s only European titleholder to continue the assault.
In the third frame, Jedrzejczyk defended most of Penne’s takedown attempts and refused to enter her challenger’s guard whenever she was begged to test it.
Jedrzejczyk repeatedly compelled Penne to stand back up to inflict more punishment until referee Marc Goddard finally stepped in and called a halt to the contest.
“She is a black belt in jiu-jitsu and she is supposed to be the best in the strawweight division. No. I’m going to be a champion for a while. Nobody is going to take this title away from me,” Jedrzejczyk said in her post-fight interview.
With the impressive victory over Penne, Jedrzejczyk remains undefeated in ten professional bouts.
On the other hand, Penne downgrades to 12-3 and snaps her two-fight winning streak. – Rappler.com
