MANILA, Philippines – The University of Sto. Tomas Tigresses made quick work of the San Sebastian College Lady Stags in 3 sets, 25-22, 25-15, 25-17, to win their fourth straight game and enter the Shakey’s V-League 12 Collegiate Conference quarterfinal round on a high note on Sunday, August 9, at the San Juan Arena.
UST, which improved to 4-1 and is just a game behind the undefeated, 5-0 Ateneo Lady Eagles, leaned on the 14 points of Pam Lastimosa and 12 points of star-in-the-making EJ Laure.
Chlodia Cortez also played well by registering 10 markers in the Tigresses’ first game without Mela Tunay, who is out due to a broken nose.
Lastimosa and Laure were impressive with spikes, combining for 21 points while Cortez registered 3 of her conversions through blocks.
As a team, UST had more spikes than San Sebastian, 35-29, more blocks, 11-3, and more service aces, 6-2.
Jolina Labiano pitched in 11 points but was the lone double-digit scorer for San Sebastian, who also received 5 points apiece from Denice Lim and Joyce Sta. Rita. The Lady Stags ended their elimination round campaign with a 1-4 record.
San Sebastian can still advance to the next round of the tournament if De La Salle University Dasmarinas loses to the CSB Lady Blazers on Sunday.
Such a scenario would put DLSU-Dasma, San Sebastian, and the Technological Institute of the Philippines in a 3-way tie with identical records.
TIP will then get eliminated, while DLSU-Dasma and San Sebastian will take on each other in a playoff for the right to join Ateneo, UST, and CSB in Group B’s quarterfinals roster.
FEU, NU, Arellano, and UP are already in the quarterfinals roster of Group A.
Scores:
UST (75) - Lastimosa 14, Laure 12, Cortez 10, Meneses 5, De Leon 5, Rafael 3, Francisco 2, Teope 1
San Sebastian (54) - Labiano 11, Sta. Rita 5, Lim 5, Villegas 4, Dalisay 3, Encarnacion 3, Sinamban 2, Guillema 1
