Unbeaten Ateneo drubs FEU in V-League quarters
MANILA, Philippines – The win streak continues for the Ateneo Lady Eagles as they decked the pesky FEU Lady Tamaraws in straight sets, 25-19, 25-14, 25-18, in the quarterfinals of the Shakey's V-League 12 Collegiate Conference on Saturday, August 29 at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
It was a more balanced offensive effort for the Lady Eagles as Alyssa Valdez posted 15 points while Jhoanna Maraguinot contributed 11. Amy Ahomiro and Kim Gequillano added 9 and 6 points, respectively.
Ateneo, who is already assured of a semifinals seat, improved their carryover record to 6-0.
Despite the sweep, the Lady Tamaraws proved tough to put away as they held strong in long, taxing rallies and kept in step with the Lady Eagles until midway in sets.
"I think it was hard for us to stay consistent as a team," Valdez noted in Filipino during the broadcast interview. "We adjusted our blocking and defense so it was difficult to be consistent throughout the game."
And even if they're on top of the standings, there's still no pressure for Ateneo to keep its pristine record. (READ: Lady Eagles: Training gives little time to relish wins)
"We just need to play our game. We need to work on our consistency," added Maraguinot in Filipino.
FEU was led by guest player Jovelyn Gonzaga's 11 points as the team fell to a 4-2 carryover record, but will have to rely on De La Salle-Dasmariñas to advance.
The Lady Tamaraws were off to a hot start and seized momentum right away with their fluid offense. But the Lady Eagles cracked open their foe's faulty floor and net defense and ran away for good as FEU did not register a single block all game long. – Rappler.com
