Preview: Meralco takes on powerhouse Smart
MANILA, Philippines -- After an electrifying start, Meralco tries to follow up its opening-day victory while powerhouse Philippine Army makes its debut when they collide with separate foes on Sunday, August 25 in the 10th Shakey’s V-League Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
The Power Spikers take on league-leading Smart in the nightcap, hoping to gain the solo lead in the team standings after winning its maiden match on opening day.
Meralco is coming off from a 25-17, 17-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-9 edging of the Philippine National Police with veterans Maureen Penetrante and Ivy Remulla leading the charge for the Power Spikers by scoring 19 and 15 points, respectively while also getting ample help from Maica Morada and Steph Mercado.
“Happy kami kasi it’s the first time of Meralco to join the V-League,” said Meralco head coach Oliver Almadro after his team eked out the hard-earned triumph. “Two weeks pa lang kaming nagpa-practice, one week pa lang kaming kumpleto.”
On the other hand, Smart is off to a rousing start by winning its first two matches even playing with only 8 players and sans ace spiker Alyssa Valdez.
Smart made short work of the Philippine National Police in their last assignment, 25-14, 25-15, 25-17 as Sue Roces and Gretchel Soltones more than made up for the scoring cudgels of the team.
