UP swims way into UAAP sweep

MANILA, Philippines -- University of the Philippines reasserted its dominance in the UAAP swimming competitions after sweeping the championship in both the men's and women's division in the 4-day meet held over the weekend in Laguna.
The UP tankers scored a 5th straight title in the women's division, collecting 587 points to take the top spot with a clear 200-point lead over second-placer Ateneo de Manila University (387).
Seven records were broken by the Lady Maroons, led by Denjylie Cordero, who reset records in 200-meter individual medley (2:25.58), 50-meter breaststroke (34.01), 100-meter breaststroke (1:14.06) and 200-meter breaststroke (2:37.75).
Her sister, Delia, also made her presence felt by breaking her own mark in the 200-meter butterfly after clocking 2:21.71.
Claire Adorna completed UP's romp by setting two records in 400-meter freestyle (4:33.69) and 200-meter backstroke (2:24.98).
De La Salle University finished a far third with 115 points while University of Santo Tomas decided to boycott the entire competition because of the eligibility issue of UP swimmer Mikee Bartolome.

Ateneo dethroned
In the men's division, the Diliman-based tankers also dominated, scoring 452 points to beat powerhouse teams De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University, who finished second and third, respectively.
Johansen Aguilar of La Salle secured a third straight MVP award while Ateneo's Anna Celina Gonzales was named the MVP in the women's side.
Meanwhile, UP's Christen Mercado and Thea Marie Caluma of Ateneo were chosen Rookies of the Year in the men's and women's divisions, respectively. - Rappler.com
