UAAP Volleyball: FEU beats tenacious UE in 4 sets
MANILA, Philippines – The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws had to repulse a gritty start by the University of the East Lady Warriors to claim their fifth win this season, 20-25, 25-5, 25-18, 25-24, in the 76th UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament, Saturday, January 25, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Lady Tams, who are looking to overtake Adamson University in the standings, led by as much as 17-11 in the opening set but blew their chances as their Recto Avenue neighbors clawed their way back into the game and stole the first canto, 25-20.
Finally settling after a sluggish start, FEU then bounced back mightily in the second set as they crushed UE, 25-5, through the heroics of Geneveve Casugod and Bernadette Pons – who combined for 26 of FEU’s points.
FEU then went on to take a 2-0 lead as they capitalized on UE’s numerous errors to take the third, 25-18.
After losing to National University in their last outing, the Lady Tams made short work of the Lady Warriors in the fourth to snare down a 5-4 win-loss slate coming into the last leg of eliminations.
Casugod tallied in 16 points to lead all scorers today while Marie Charlemagne Simborio and Pons added 12 and 10 respectively.
Michelle Manansala and Ma. Shaya Adorador meanwhile spearheaded UE’s losing cause with 12 and 11.
UE, which faces Adamson next on January 29, goes down deeper in the standings with a 0-9 card. FEU, on the other hand will square off with De La Salle on their next game, also on January 29. - Rappler.com
