MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo Lady Eagles and the UST Tigresses kick-off their UAAP Season 77 Volleyball campaign with wins on Saturday, November 22 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Reigning MVP Alyssa Valdez showed no signs of off-season rust as she fueled the Ateneo Lady Eagles in a sweep of last year's semifinal antagonists NU Lady Bulldogs, 25-21, 25-18, 25-15
Last year's Finals MVP scored on back to back aces ending the third to finish off National University in straight sets.
Valdez hit a game-high 28 points on 20 kills, 6 aces and two blocks.
The Tigresses, meanwhile, cruised to a 3-set sweep of the UE Lady Red Warriors, 25-11, 25-12, 25-14. Team captain Pam Lastimosa led the way with 12 points while rookie EJ Laure, who started for this game, wound up with 8 markers including two blocks.
The Tigresses were in form right away showcasing much-improved net defense, which the Lady Warriors had all the trouble penetrating.
