Unboxing and first look at 6-inch Nokia Lumia 1520
MANILA, Philippines - 2013 saw the growth of the phablet market - a new segment of users that wanted smartphones with screens bigger than the average phone but smaller than the average tablet.
I’d like to say every major player released a phablet in 2013 - but Apple is, for now, stubborn about the 4-inch iPhone form factor. Every major Android manufacturer did though, and before the end of the year, so did Windows Phone 8 manufacturer Nokia.
The 6-inch Nokia Lumia 1520 is a BIG step into this new space, literally and figuratively.
Believe it or not (and I’m not sure why it took this long) it’s the first Windows Phone 8 device with a Full HD display, a standard on most high-end smartphones since the second half of 2012. But it was worth the wait: with Nokia’s Clear Black technology that ensures deep blacks and vibrant colors, this 367ppi display is absolutely gorgeous, even outdoors.
The phone is also the first to run the most up-to-date version of Windows Phone 8 called Lumia Black that adds a third row of tiles to the home screen, a new glance screen for notifications and a nifty double tap to wake feature.
The OS update allows the phone to run its impressive hardware spec sheet that includes a quad-core 2.2 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor (only a handful of phones have it including the LG G2, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Nexus 5), 2GB of RAM and the 6-inch 1920 x 1080 IPS LCD.
On paper the 1520 should take great photos. It is blessed with a 20 megapixel Pure View Zeiss f/2.4 lens with a 1/2.5-inch sensor. Which is not as great as the 41 megapixel f/2.2 Zeiss, 1/1.5 inch sensor Lumia 1020, but not too shabby either.
Nokia put in a generous 3400mAH, non-user replaceable battery in the 1520. The company says it should last a whole day on average use.
The Lumia 1520 is available in matte black, yellow, white and a glossy red. Official pricing information for the Philippines is currently unavailable but Nokia reps say the phone should go on sale sometime in January 2014. Kim Store sells it at P28,900.
In the US, the Lumia 1520 is available from AT&T for $199.99 on contract and $584.99 contract-free.
