#ThewRap: Videos you need to watch this week, February 27 - March 5, 2017

Hello! Here's a round-up of videos from the past week that you need to watch

Dear Rappler reader,

Human rights took front and center stage this week as the Human Rights Watch released its report "License to Kill," confirming the role of the Philippine police in extrajudicial killings in the Duterte administration's war on drugs.

Human rights and the rule of law again was a concern of lawyers as police allegedly broke into the house of the brother of the Iglesia ni Cristo patriarch.

But some treats await weekend warriors, as we show you snippets of the Calbayog zipline and Elha Nympha's rendition of a Beyonce song.

Below are the videos we think you shouldn't miss.

Int'l group's report on PH drug war: 'License to Kill'

Peter Bouckaert, Human Right's Watch's Emergencies Director who wrote the report "License to Kill" told Rappler: “It comes down to the question of reality, If you go to these neighborhoods and see how heavily policed they are, ask yourself, is it possible to have a group of killers, 8, 10 people, to drive around every night, night after night, around these neighborhoods and kill people, without working together with the police? It simply, it doesn’t meet the test of reality.” Watch HRW's video on the report.

'War on drugs' returns

The Philippine National Police's war on drugs makes a comeback. President Rodrigo Duterte said he decided, during a February 27 command conference, to allow limited participation of the police in his controversial anti-drug campaign through the creation of smaller task forces composed of cops with no history of corruption. In a speech on March 2, the President vows, "More killings to come."

Will LP bolt House majority?

House and Senate politics show just how everything is intertwined as Liberal Party congressmen confront the question – will they stay or will they go? That, after Liberal Party senators severed their ties with the majority. The LPs in the House of Representatives say they will only decide on the matter until after the voting on the death penalty bill.

The trials and tribulations of Angel Manalo

Supporters of Felix Nathaniel "Angel" Manalo, the estranged sibling of Iglesia Ni Cristo Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo, flocked to Camp Karingal in Quezon City on Thursday night, March 2, to see the former INC member after his arrest. Some say it's family infighting, but it's a hundred times complicated when the family happens to lead its own religious sect.

Saguisag: Did Angel Manalo's arrest follow the rule of law?

Jenny Manalo, sister-in-law of Iglesia ni Cristo Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo, was trembling as she told Rappler on the phone about the raid on their house at 36 Tandang Sora, the Iglesia ni Cristo compound in Quezon City. Police broke into Angel Manalo's house before noon on Thursday, March 2 and started pointing guns at them. One of the siblings lawyers, former Senator Rene Saguisag said he hoped the rule of law was followed and evidence was not planted. "I hope they did not have the 'Bureau of Plant Industry' with them."

On board USS Carl Vinson: Show of force in the South China Sea?

USS Carl Vinson, a Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States, is in Philippine waters. It's a historic vessel, participating in the most prominent wars the US got into. The body of Osama bin Laden was buried at sea in 2011 from the deck of the Carl Vinson. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana visited the US aircraft carrier Saturday, hailing the "strong relationship" with Washington despite President Rodrigo Duterte's pivot away from Manila's traditional ally. Observers are asking, is this a show of force in the South China Sea against Chinese vessels?

Trump praised for more measured speech

Donald Trump's muted prime-time address to Congress got positive reviews on Wednesday, but numerous questions remained about the details and costs of his ambitious agenda. In the speech, the American president ditched his bellicose rhetoric in favor of a call for national unity and a more presidential timber.

The Voice Kids Philippines season 2 winner Elha Nympha stunned audiences when she sang Beyonce's "Love On Top" at a press event for Steve Harvey and Ellen DeGeneres' show Little Big Shots.
