Dear Rappler readers,

Rife with contradictions, despair and hope were the dominant emotions this week. Despair, as the nation mourned 17-year-old Kian delos Santos, who was laid to rest Saturday as the Senate launched a probe on his death.

The saga of the smuggling issue in the Bureau of Customs continues. On Tuesday, outgoing Customs commissioner Nicanor Faeldon dropped the bomb on Senator Panfilo Lacson – his son Panfilo Jr. was allegedly involved in several smuggling opperations. Faeldon asked, could the senator be privy to the activities his son is accused of?

Hope, as the Philippine contingent in the Southeast Asian Games delivered medal after medal – from triathlon, to basketball, to boxing.

In a time where post-truth reigns, veteran journalists Tina Monzon-Palma, Cheche Lazaro, and Vergel Santos mull over the role of journalism in times of crises, offering advice to peers and neophytes alike. Transparency and accountability, they said, are values that journalists must uphold in trying times.

Here are stories we think you shouldn't miss.
